2019 Buick Regal Sportback Vs. 2019 Kia Stinger

By | September 24th, 2019

Sportback sedans, also called grand tourers, are quickly gaining popularity here in the Saginaw, Midland, and Bay City areas, and two of the best are the 2019 Buick Regal Sportback and the 2019 Kia Stinger. Both offer ample interior space, a massive cargo area, and plenty of luxury for virtually any buyer, but which is better for your family? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The 2019 Kia Stinger is a grand tourer through and through, as its sporty looks hark back to the era when these roomy performance cars were some of the sportiest rigs on the road. Its lower trim levels are a little more toned down, but they still include large, stylish wheels and that swoopy sportback body. Move into the GT and higher trims, and the Stinger’s true personality shines with large air inlets, sporty hood trim, even larger wheels, and more.

The Buick Regal Sportback also harks back to the grand tourer era, but it focuses more on a premium look than a sporty one. This premium look is highlighted by its smooth lines, signature Buick grille, and lack of design drama. Even in its sporty variant, the GS, the Regal Sportback takes care not to stray from its sub-luxury roots.

In overall size, the Regal Sportback is significantly longer and taller than the Stinger, but the Kia comes back with a wider body, longer wheelbase, and a far greater peak curb weight.

Looking at standard exterior features, these two sportback models match up evenly in most areas, but the Kia Stinger’s higher price allows more room for standard 18-inch wheels, LED lighting all around, and a few other small advantages that build value.

Advantage: 2019 Kia Sportage

  •       Sporty look that grabs eyeballs
  •       Full-LED lighting comes standard
  •       Larger standard wheels
  •       GT models push sportiness even further

Advantage: 2019 Buick Regal

  •       More upscale appearance
  •       GS trim sets itself apart
  •       Good looking without being a distraction

Interior

Inside, the Buick Regal Sportback is a true sub-luxury sedan, as it boasts an excellent combination of luxurious features, like standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 7-inch touchscreen, multiple USB ports, and more, while balancing it with affordable but comfortable features like premium cloth upholstery. Buyers seeking more luxury can get this in the higher trims that include leather upholstery, premium audio systems, and more. Those seeking the pinnacle in luxury will find this range-topping Avenir, which includes quilted stitching and more.

Want sportiness? The 2019 Buick Regal delivers this in its GS trim, which adds a black-heavy color scheme, flat-bottom steering wheel, and sport seats with adjustable bolsters while still offering plenty of luxury.

The 2019 Kia Stinger’s cabin is just like the sport-touring models it pays homage to with its delicate balance of sportiness and luxury. The latter is front and center with its standard leather upholstery, full-LED interior lighting, 12-way power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear USB ports, and much more.

Moving into the Stinger Premium adds tons more luxury features like a 15-speaker audio system, rain-sensing wipers, navigation, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and more. In the GT trims, the Stinger tosses in more bolstering on the seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and more. Moving into the GT1 and GT2 trims pads this sportiness with extra luxury features.

As for roominess, the Kia Stinger and Buick Regal go back and forth in each area of the cabin. The Regal wins in front and rear headroom, front and rear shoulder room, and rear legroom, but the Kia Stinger wins in front legroom and front and rear hip room. In the cargo area, the Regal Sportback has 8.2 cubes more space with the seats upright. The Stinger doesn’t have a rating with the rear seats folded, while the Regal swallows a massive 60.7 cubes with the seats folded.

Performance

The Buick Regal Sportback and Kia Stinger both have a pair of powertrain options that start with potent 2.0-liter turbocharged standard units. In the Regal Sportback, this turbo-four pumps out 250 horsepower, while The Stinger’s boosted four-pot delivers 255 ponies. In the Regal, this engine pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive, while the all-wheel-drive Regal uses an eight-speed auto. The Stinger uses an eight-speed across the board and rear- or all-wheel drive.

With its base powertrain, the Stinger sprints to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, which is exactly one second slower than the Regal.

The Regal GS gets a 310-horsepower3.6-liter V-6 engine, all-wheel drive, and a nine-speed automatic transmission. This delivers a quick 5.4-second 0-to-60 time. While that is respectable, the Stinger GT lineup uses a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 that pounds out 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque for a 4.4-second 0-to-60 sprint time, making it a serious performer in a straight line. The Stinger’s 4,000-pound curb weight kills some fun in the corners, but the electronically controlled suspension does its best keeping things tight.
