2019 Buick Regal TourX Vs. 2020 Volvo V60

By | October 8th, 2019

Station wagons were the minivans of the world through the 1960s and 70s, as they gave larger families a vehicle that could handle the whole family, the dog, and luggage while maintaining a sedan-like drive. Today, station wagons are a relative rarity, but there are a few solid options, including the 2020 Volvo V60 and the 2019 Buick Regal TourX. Which is better for our Saginaw area families? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

Station wagons were the minivans of the 1960s and 70s, as they gave buyers the space they needed for the whole family and cargo while retaining a car-like drive. Today, these two-box people haulers are far less common and put their focus on cargo instead of offering three rows of seats like they did in the 60s and 70s. Also, they are more stylish than ever, and evidence of this is easy to find in the stunning 2019 Buick Regal TourX and 2020 Volvo V60.

The Buick Regal TourX may have an American nameplate, but it has German DNA, and this is clear with its distinct European styling that includes swoopy body lines, a rounded nose, a waterfall grille, and sloping roofline.

The Volvo V60 is also European, but it’s Swedish too, which plays heavily into its straightforward, boxy design. There are plenty of look-good touches to set off the V60, though, including its striking headlights with the Thor’s hammer daytime running lights, distinct design elements within each trim level, and plethora of flashy wheel options.

Though the V60 is a true luxury wagon and the Regal TourX is more of a sub-luxury model, that boast similar standard exterior features, including 18-inch wheels, LED taillights, and more. The V60 puts itself in the lead a bit with its standard LED headlights and power liftgate. For the $10,300 starting price gap between the two, these two exteriors feature a surprising number of similarities.

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Buick Regal ranges from upscale to decked out, giving buyers a wide range of choices to meet their budgets and desires. The design is sharp and very European with its chrome trimming, swoopy lines, a clean center stack, and a slight angle toward the driver.

Like its body, the Volvo V60’s cabin is upright and looks distinguished. The instrument panel is clean and dark, and the center stack is clutter-free. It also features a blocky steering wheel center cap and a standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that provide a nice contrast of simplicity and technology

In terms of standard features, the Buick Regal TourX has a lot to offer for a sub-$30,000 wagon with its standard 7-inch touchscreen, seven-speaker premium audio system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and more. Moving into higher trims adds an 8-inch touchscreen, Siri Eyes Free, natural voice recognition, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats and steering wheel, an in-vehicle ionizer, ambient interior lighting, and leather-appointed seating.

The 2020 Volvo V60 is a true luxury car with standard features to match, including an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, premium cloth upholstery or no-cost leather, a panoramic moonroof, a power driver’s seat with memory, a power passenger’s seat, a 12.3-inch driver display, and a 10-speaker audio system.

Performance

Station wagons aren’t supposed to be fast, right? Try telling Buick and Volvo that. These wagons boast all-turbo four-cylinder engine lineups with incredible power and surprisingly quick acceleration.

The Regal TourX uses a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that pumps out 250 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and twin-clutch all-wheel drive for a 6.3-second 0-to-60 time. With its standard all-wheel drive, the Regal TourX’s fuel economy takes a small hit, but it’s not bad at 21 mpg city, 29 highway, and 22 combined.

The Volvo V60 has three 2.0-liter powertrains to pick from, the T5, T6, and T8 plug-in hybrid. The T5 unit is the standard powertrain, and it pumps out 250 horses and 350 pound-feet of torque. The T5 powertrain pairs the supercharged and turbocharged (yes both) 2.0-liter engine to an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive for a 6.4-second 0-to-60 time. The V60 also shines in fuel economy with the T5 powertrain at 24 mpg city, 36 highway, and 28 combined.

The T6 powertrain increases the double-boosted 2.0-liter engine’s output to 316 horsepower and 400 pound-feet. The added power drops its 0-to-60 time to just 5.5 seconds. The T6 powertrain includes all-wheel drive, so it loses a little in fuel economy, falling to 21 mpg city, 31 highway, and 25 combined.

The range-topping T8 plug-in hybrid in the Polestar model that uses the same 2.0-liter engine but pairs it to an electric motor for added power and thriftiness. This powertrain delivers 415 horsepower and 494 pound-feet of torque for a 4.5-second 0-to-60 time while turning in a 22-mile EV range and 30 mpg combined in hybrid mode.
