2020 Buick Envision Vs. 2020 Cadillac XT4

By | July 23rd, 2020

The 2020 Buick Envision may not be your first thought when considering a luxury crossover in the Tri-City area. But take a second and line it up next to the Cadillac XT4, and you may be surprised just how well it stacks up against this luxury compact crossover. Continue reading to see the Envision take on the XT4 feature-for-feature.

Exterior

The Buick Envision is a relatively new addition to the compact crossover segment, as it debuted back in 2016. It rolls in with a European look that includes softer body lines and a relatively toned-down overall design. Up front, it is distinctly Buick with the signature waterfall grille and tricolor badge. Some buyers may find its relatively timid looks a little too bland, but for buyers who prefer not to stand out in traffic, the Envision is the perfect option.

The Cadillac XT4 is still very fresh, as it debuted only a year ago in 2019. This is a new styling direction for Cadillac, as it moves from bland luxury crossovers to sharply design models that grab eyeballs. And grab eyeballs the 2020 XT4 does. Some buyers may not appreciate the attention it attracts with its wild headlights and taillights, but those who like to talk about their car will love this Caddy crossover.

As for features, the 2020 Buick Envision’s standard exterior goodies include 18-inch 10-spoke painted aluminum wheels, automatic on/off HID headlights, fog lights, a hands-free power liftgate, heated power outside mirrors, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, and rear intermittent wiper.

The 2020 XT4’s standard exterior features are similar to the Envision’s, but it has some extra look-good trim pieces that give it a more premium appearance. Its standard exterior amenities include 18-inch 10-spoke bright-silver aluminum wheels, dual-outlet exhaust, automatic-on/off headlights, black lower fascia accent, body-color door handles with satin-chrome accents, body-color mirrors with power operation and heat, a bright accent grille with Galvano surround, an acoustic-laminated windshield, tinted rear glass, LED daytime running lights, LED headlights, LED taillights, a rear intermittent wiper, and satin-aluminum window surrounds.

Breaking out the tape measure shows the Envision is over 2 inches longer than the XT4, but the Cadillac shows its sporty intentions with a significantly wider body and a longer wheelbase that pushes the wheels to the corners.

Advantage: 2020 Buick Envision

  •       Toned-down European design
  •       Great exterior features for the money

Advantage: 2020 Cadillac XT4

  •       Wild look fits an extrovert’s personality perfectly
  •       LED lighting all around
  •       More exterior features
  •       Sport model adds exclusive bits to enhance sportiness

Interior

Inside, the 2020 Buick Envision has a simple design but still offers plenty of elegance to compete with higher-priced luxury cars. The cabin is accented by a large instrument panel insert that flows across the entire dash, a three-spoke steering wheel, a clean center stack, and sharply contrasting color options. Enhancing its premium interior feel is the Envision’s surprisingly compliant ride, soft seats, and low in-cabin noise.

The 2020 XT4 continues its wild ways with a relatively busy cabin that includes lots of lines shooting in various directions, a large touchscreen, a wide and button-heavy HVAC system, and tons of premium materials. Buyers who prefer a cabin that feels more like a feature-packed luxury crossover may prefer the XT4’s busier layout, but folks looking to just drive their vehicle will prefer the simpler Envision layout.

In interior room, the 2020 Envision has roomier front seats and significantly more cargo space. Despite its shorter body, the 2020 XT4 has more rear-seat room.

If you’re looking for standard features, both crossovers have a lot to offer in this department. The 2020 Buick Envision comes standard with a 4.2-inch color driver-information center, 4G LTE Wi-Fi® (data plan required), a six-speaker audio system, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, eight-way power front seats, active noise cancellation, ambient interior lighting, Buick Infotainment System, an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, Siri EyesFree, Bluetooth® connectivity with audio streaming, front USB data and charging ports, rear USB charging ports, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, keyless open and ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leatherette seating, SiriusXM®, and much more.

The XT4 matches all the Envision’s features and adds SiriusXM® 360L. The XT4 also has a leg up in safety gear with its standard forward collision warning, rear-park assist, safety alert seat, automatic emergency braking, and front pedestrian braking.

Performance

Small luxury crossovers must offer a little performance to go with their upscale rides and good fuel economy. The 2020 Cadillac XT4 offers a potent 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that delivers 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This power routes through a nine-speed automatic transmission and out to the front or all four wheels for a 7.5-second 0-to-60 time. For such a potent four-cylinder engine, that is a subpar acceleration time, but the XT4 makes up for it with good handling.

The 2020 Buick Envision is not quite a luxury crossover, so it gets away with offering a lower-powered 2.5-liter four-cylinder base engine. This 197-horsepower four-pot pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission that ships power to the front or all four wheels. There have been no acceleration tests performed with this engine.

To compete with the XT4 and other luxury crossovers, Buick offers an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pumps out 252 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive for a 6.6-second 0-to-60 time.

While the range-topping Envision may be quicker than the XT4, the Cadillac wins the fuel-economy battle across the board.
