Buick Encore Vs. Honda CR-V

By | September 19th, 2019

Buying a compact crossover leaves you with tons of choices, including the 2019 Buick Encore and 2019 Honda CR-V. Both offer traffic-friendly platforms and comfortable cabins, but can the smaller Encore’s higher levels of luxury push it ahead of the Honda CR-V on our Saginaw, Midland, and Bay City area shoppers’ lists? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

With a subcompact footprint, the 2019 Buick Encore is a fantastic option for buyers seeking a luxurious crossover that makes zipping through city traffic more manageable. At 12.2 inches shorter than the CR-V, the Encore is that and more. Plus, with its lower curb weight, it feels nimbler while tackling your daily commute.

The Encore also has a leg up on the CR-V with its more traditional design language. The 2019 Encore is an elegant-looking, European-influenced crossover with minimal fuss and plenty of style. The CR-V is still stylish, but some more conservative buyers may find its hard lines and bold lighting features a touch over the top.

Advantage: 2019 Buick Encore

  • Smaller platform is more manageable
  • Sleek, pleasing looks

Advantage: 2019 Honda CR-V

  • Sharp look pleases some shoppers
  • Higher ride height

Interior

The 2019 Honda CR-V is a compact compared to the subcompact Encore, so it offers significantly more in-cabin space. The most noticeable difference is its roomy rear seat that provides 40.4 inches of legroom, besting the Encore by 4.7 inches. It also beats the Encore in seat width, except in the rear.

The Encore is a tighter fit, but as a sub-luxury model, it boasts loads of standard goodies in its attractively priced base trim. Its long list of standard features includes an 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Buick QuietTuning, a power driver’s seat, SiriusXM, and more. These features are all available in the CR-V – other than the 8-inch touchscreen, as the CR-V tops out at 7 inches – but they come in higher trim levels.

If you’re hauling cargo, the Encore swallows an impressive-for-a-subcompact 18.8 cubic feet with the rear seats upright and 48.4 cubes with the seats folded. For serious cargo haulers, though, the CR-V’s 39.2 to 75.8 cubes of cargo room is unbeatable in the compact crossover class.

Keeping passengers safe falls into the Honda CR-V’s “win” column, as it is an IIHS Top Safety Pick thanks to “Good” ratings in all crash tests and a “Superior” rating in forward-collision avoidance with the optional automatic emergency braking.

Performance

The 2019 Buick Encore gives buyers two engines to pick from, but they both are 1.4-liter turbocharged units. The standard 1.4-liter engine delivers 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque that flows through a six-speed automatic transmission. Experts have not tested the Encore’s acceleration time with this engine, but its platform-mate, the Chevy Trax, sprints to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds with this engine.

The optional 1.4-liter engine boasts direct fuel injection and pumps out a 153 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. This power also flows through a six-speed automatic transmission for an 8.5-second 0-to-60 time.

The larger CR-V requires more power to get it motivated, and its standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is up to the task with 184 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. This power routes through a continuously variable transmission and sprints the CR-V to 60 mph in 7.9 seconds – 1.4 seconds quicker than the base Encore.

In EX and higher CR-V trims, Honda treats buyers to a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque. With the bulk of its power sitting lower in the rev band, this engine makes the CR-V slightly quicker at 7.7 seconds to 60 mph.

The 2019 Buick Encore delivers excellent fuel economy at up to 25 mpg city, 30 highway, and 27 combined, but both CR-V powertrain options beat it. The base CR-V engine delivers up to 25 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined. The 1.5-liter turbo engine pushes efficiency to 27 mpg city, 33 highway, and 29 combined.
